General Training Reading Format


Timing: The test lasts for 60 minutes.

Sections: The General Training Reading test is divided into three sections, and you will be given a separate answer booklet for each section.

Section 1: This section usually contains two or three short texts, and there are usually 10 to 14 questions. The texts are usually related to everyday life, such as advertisements, job descriptions, or travel schedules.

Section 2: This section usually contains two texts, and there are usually 14 questions. The texts are longer than those in Section 1 and may be descriptive or factual, such as a magazine article or a report on a topic of general interest.

Section 3: This section usually contains one long text, and there are usually 14 questions. The text is more complex and may be descriptive, factual, or analytical, such as a passage from a book or a scholarly article.

Question types: The General Training Reading test includes a variety of question types, such as:

  • Multiple choice: You will be given a question and a list of options to choose from.
  • Matching: You will be given a list of items to match with another list of items.
  • Sentence completion: You will be given an incomplete sentence and must choose the correct word or words to complete it.
  • True/False/Not Given: You will be given a statement and must decide whether it is true, false, or not given based on the information in the text.

Answering: You must answer all questions in the answer booklet, and you can write your answers in pencil or pen.

Scoring: Your score will be based on the number of correct answers you give, and there is no penalty for incorrect answers. Your score will be reported on a scale from 0 to 9, with half-point increments.
