General Training Reading Strategies

The IELTS General Training Reading test requires a different set of strategies compared to the Academic Reading test. Here are some strategies that you can use to prepare for the General Training Reading test:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the test format: The IELTS General Training Reading test consists of three sections, each with a different passage to read and a set of questions to answer. The test lasts 60 minutes, and you must answer all questions in the answer booklet.
  2. Skim and scan: Before you start reading the passage, skim through it quickly to get an idea of what it is about. Then, scan the questions and underline or circle any keywords or phrases that may help you locate the answer in the passage.
  3. Manage your time: You have 60 minutes to complete the reading test, so it is important to manage your time well. You should aim to spend about 20 minutes on each section.
  4. Be aware of question types: The IELTS General Training Reading test includes a variety of question types, such as multiple choice, matching, sentence completion, and True/False/Not Given. Make sure you understand the requirements of each question type and how to approach it.
  5. Read the instructions carefully: Make sure you read the instructions for each question carefully, as they may contain important information about how to answer the question.
  6. Don't spend too much time on one question: If you are having difficulty with a question, don't spend too much time on it. Move on to the next question and come back to it later if you have time.
  7. Use context clues: If you are unsure of the meaning of a word or phrase, try to use context clues to figure out what it means. Look at the words or phrases that come before and after it to get a better idea of what it means.
  8. Keep your answers brief: In some question types, such as sentence completion, you may be required to write your answer in a specific number of words. Make sure you follow the instructions and keep your answers brief.
  9. Check your spelling and grammar: Make sure you check your spelling and grammar when writing your answers. Simple mistakes can cost you valuable points.
  10. Practice, practice, practice: The more you practice, the more comfortable you will become with the test format and the better your chances of achieving a high score. Try to take practice tests under exam conditions to simulate the test environment.
