Question Types of IELTS in Academic IELTS


Here are the types of questions that can appear in each section of the IELTS test:

Listening:

  1. Multiple choice questions: The test taker has to choose the correct answer from a list of options.
  2. Form completion: The test taker has to complete a form with information they hear in the recording.
  3. Short answer questions: The test taker has to provide short answers to questions based on the recording.
  4. Sentence completion: The test taker has to complete sentences with information they hear in the recording.
  5. Matching: The test taker has to match information from the recording with options given.

Reading:

  1. Multiple choice questions: The test taker has to choose the correct answer from a list of options.
  2. True/false/not given questions: The test taker has to determine whether a statement is true, false, or not given based on the text.
  3. Matching: The test taker has to match information from the text with options given.
  4. Sentence completion: The test taker has to complete sentences with information they read in the text.
  5. Summary completion: The test taker has to complete a summary of the text using words from the text.

 

 

Writing:

  1. Essay: The test taker has to write an essay in response to a prompt.
  2. Graph, chart, or diagram: The test taker has to describe or explain a graph, chart, or diagram based on the information provided.
  3. Short answer questions: The test taker has to answer a series of short questions based on a given topic.

Speaking:

  1. Personal questions: The test taker is asked questions about themselves and their experiences.
  2. Opinion questions: The test taker is asked to express their opinion on a given topic and provide supporting arguments.
  3. Scenario-based questions: The test taker is asked to respond to a scenario or situation presented by the examiner.
  4. Discussion questions: The test taker is asked to discuss a topic related to their field of study or work.
